Understandably we are a little confused and frustrated over a process that seems not well thought out to say the least, however, lets keep in mind the three primary people at the center of this debate are young athletes.

Regardless of how we feel about the selection process we should support these ladies in their hard work and efforts now and once they (whichever two) are at the games.

While I'm guessing the top three contenders are WAY too busy trying to QUALIFY FOR THE FREAKIN' OLYMPICS to browse forums such as this, I would hate to think that any one of them might get a sense of discontent from gymnastics fans and feel they aren't being supprted while in Beijing.

How is that complicated?

If it is that simple why are they awarding points for events that occured years ago? What was the rationale for that, where is the fairness?

Lets have the three compete head to head and send the top two. That won't happend because it would not achieve the results that GC has already determined

I agree. A head-to-head competition will never happen for precisely the reasons you mentioned. The results were all predetermined by GCG a long time ago. It really is a shame what we are putting our athletes through right now. This point system was never thought out properly and these girls are the ones who are paying the price. I hope whoever goes, they will still be in top shape to compete after all this! If GCG do not send our two best gymnasts, then they will have alot of explaining to do and maybe finally they will do some housecleaning!

The Canadian National Championships will take place June 1-8 in Calgary. GCG are planning on announcing who the two athletes are that they have chosen to send to Beijing. If Kristina Vaculik wins the championships again and isn't chosen to represent Canada, what will that say about the selection process and GCG?

Kristina Vaculik is the two time Canadian Champion; four time Elite Canada Champion; 2006 Jr. High Performance Athlete of the Year. Her results from the 2008 Pacific Rim competition: 6th A.A., her score of 15.8 on beam was the highest mark from the Canadian team, tied with Nastia Liukin of the US for silver on bars. Maribor World Cup, Slovenia, she won gold and silver for Canada. Nansy Damianova, who is currently leading in the points system, wouldn't even come close to making an event final at the olympics!
The facts are at this time Canada does not have any female gymnasts that would even be considered for the USA team. Stay home save money this Olympics is between China and the USA.

as a novice to the sport, (young daughter and no affiliation to any of the 3 top gymnast or club), it seems strange to award points for past events. What happened to what have you done for me lately

who would be, is, the top two ranked gymnasts today based upon current performance, ie within the last year.

Have all three competed head to head and if so who won?
A complicated selection critera can appear very fair or to the contrary, something developed to provide the appearance of being fair. Easy to play with numbers and formulas.

There is a process in place and all the potential athletes were aware of it.
The time to make a change was before the process was set up not when its not giving you the "correct" athlete. I also find some of the anti-Fench/Quebec comments to be exceptionally distatseful and show the mean-mindedness of some of those protesting the process as unfair.

You are entitled to your own opinion, however I applaud the efforts of those involved who have taken the time to initiate this petition. GCG needs a wake up call. How could a change be made to the process before the process was set up, when that information was not even made available to the public? Even today, the selection process is not readily available from GCG. What are they trying to cover-up? I also don't think there has been any anti-French/Quebec comments made, and I am a francophone. Change is desperately needed in the national women's artistic program and maybe this online petition is the start!

No wonder why our sport is fading. It is also a shame that sport Seneca is loosing its high performance program, what is wrong here? If you honestly believe that Nansy and Elyse earned their points "fairly" then I think you need to take another look at the whole selection process criteria again.
