Following taken from the Canada Revenue Agency website:

You may be able to claim the public service bodies' rebate for the GST or the federal part of the HST paid or payable on eligible purchases and expenses if you are any of the following:
• a charity;
• a qualifying non-profit organization (qualifying NPO); or
• a selected public service body.

Public service body - means a charity, a non-profit organization, a municipality, a university, a public college, a school authority, or hospital authority.

Latest rumour has it that the transfer of Gemini Gymnastics was not to save money by being able to obtain a lower interest rate. Since all members fees will or have gone up. It's difficult to believe the members voted for this after directors explained the ramifications of their proposal.

The end of Gemini Gymnastics as a non-profit organization and increased fees in return for what no bingos or fund raising.

I interpret the above use of "public service body" as meaning for example a city run program. The gym is privately owned and so in the private rather than public sector.

All the privately owned gyms that I know of charge HST, as they are required to. If I am wrong though, someone please do let me know.

HST clarification is the following statement correct as a registered NPO the majority of Gemini Gymnastics fees would have been HST exempt now as a for profit private company they are not.

The following types of services are HST-taxable, although some could be HST-exempt if provided by a public service body to children age 14 and under and underprivileged individuals with a disability.

Gym and Athletic Membership Fees, Ballet, Karate, Trampoline, Hockey, Soccer Lessons, etc.

Gemini did have loot bags. I agree with gym mum. Thanks to all the parents who help out at these events. Without these volunteers, there would be none of these events or they would cost us a whole lot more.

I agree GymMum, the way some people treat volunteers at competitions is pretty sad. Everyone pays a lot of money for their kids to do sports, but more respect should be given to volunteers who devote their time and energy to host competitions, tournaments, recitals what have, you so that the kids have opportunities to compete and shine in whatever sport they are in.

Gift bags are optional and not at all required. When we have run meets we have always counted on donations for gift bags. No donations no gift bags! In terms of charging an athlete it could have been a new volunteer that had not helped with a meet before!! The key word is volunteer. Cut them some slack I'm sure they weren't trying to rip you off!!

Usually there is a registration gift...sometimes they ask for donations in lieu of..all athletes competing on that specific weekend do not need to pay admission fees...at one point at a competition we were asked to pay for our daughter and I spoke with the meet director to clarify

I was wondering if at all the qualifiers if there are gift bags? And if an athlete is going to watch a friend on a different day , if they have to pay to get into the meet?

from previous experiences they take the top 32 scores. I've seen an athlete actually place 32nd but because of a few ties the girls that placed 27th or better qualified for a total of 32 athletes. That is if any rules haven't changed in the meantime;)

I am new to this and just wondering how the top 32 are chosen. How do they handle ties? If there are 2 or 3 tied for 10th and maybe 2 tied for 20th, do they send more than 32 or do they eliminate 11th and 12th spot for example. Sorry if it is a dumb question, my daughter's coach was unsure and I know in competition there can be 2 or 3 tied for first and they still have 2nd, and 3rd place.

Thanks for your help,

I had agreed with this at first, however on watching the spread on average scores from qualifier to qualifier I believe it is not a fair playing field with the different judging.
Last year in L7 13yrs & 14yrs high scores were 50+ with a 51+ being an excelled score.
This year it seems that pending the qualifier the scoring is all over the place. Ottawa gave away 51+ scores, then Oshawa gives 49's to the top guns. Again, itis not an equal playing ground.
When decisions like this are made it needs to be clear and out there before qualifiers start so that the athletes know what there goals are and what they are striving for. Most are almost done all their qualifiers and now get told that they don't even have a chance at Easterns so what is the point of Championships. This is the biggest DEMOTIVATING move they could do to these Athletes. Those that are sitting in 5th to 10th had a dream to still have a chance of going to Easterns, now they have nothing and the top 4 have already been established so again what is the point to carry on.
