MELBOURNE, Australia — Canadians earned three gold medals at the Pacific Rim gymnastics championships.
Jason Burnett and Karen Cockburn won men’s and women’s trampoline gold, while Dominque Pegg of Sarnia, Ont., was tops in the women’s senior vault.
Pegg landed two solid vaults in the women’s artistic gymnastics final for her victory.
“I try not to think about medals when I’m competing but it’s always in the back of your mind,” said Pegg, who also placed seventh in the beam final. “Winning gold here against the top Chinese and Americans is a pretty big accomplishment for me.”
Bronze medals were claimed by Kristina Vaculik of Whitby, Ont., in the women’s gymnastics senior floor exercise, Madeleine Gardiner of Cambridge, Ont., in the junior beam competition and Maria Kitkarska of Montreal in the junior rhythmic gymnastics ball event.
Vaculik trailed only Americans Rebecca Bross and Alexandra Raisman. Vaculik also placed fourth on uneven bars and vault and was sixth on beam.
In other Canadian women’s gymnastics results, Sabrina Gill of Oakville, Ont., was seventh on vault and beam, and Gardiner was fifth on vault, seventh on uneven bars and floor.
In rhythmic gymnastics, Alexandra Martincek of Markham, Ont., and Demetra Mancheva of Vancouver were fourth and fifth, respectively, in both the senior ball and ribbon events. In the junior competition, Kitkarska was fourth in clubs and Lourenca Agla of Montreal was eighth in the ball event. In the junior trampoline event, Mariah Madigan of Toronto and Curtis Gerein of Kelowna, B.C. both finished fifth.
