Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, Aarhus 2006.
Event Preview – New stars
BETWEEN YING AND YANG !

FIG Office, October 05: Just a few days before the opening of the 39th Artistic Gymnastics World Championships (established in 1903 in Antwerp, BEL!), questions are creating restlessness among the observers. The main issue is the Code of Points — in its almost final version, since the technical committees will still be able to fine tune it after the Aarhus event.  Everybody wants to know how gymnasts and coaches have prepared themselves for this new orientation. Has there been support or worries, has the discipline lost its momentum with the younger athletes?  The question, especially in the media’s mind, is whether we will discover a new star. Who will be the one who will convince the judges, touch the public’s heart, and remind everyone that the sport of gymnastics is above all artistic? Who will be the athlete who will remain etched in our memory?
What shall we expect from the gymnasts?

The European Championships last spring in Volos and the World Cup competitions have left us with some clues.  But everything has not yet been revealed; since then, a lot has been refined and there has been no break in training.

On one hand, we have the technically minded and risk takers who embrace Difficulty, and on whom we can depend to lift us from our seats.

On the other hand, we have the perfectionists, the precisionists of gymnastics, who will pay attention to the minute detail and on whom we can count to overwhelm the entire audience. Ultimately, we have the gymnasts who compete to qualify themselves and to qualify their teams, and the star will emerge from the unexpected to the delight of everyone.

The answer will be on October 22!
