First of all, it’s been darn cold. Naturally the two weeks leading up to the games was sunny and warm! We’ve also had very strong winds, which combined with low temperatures, are causing delays with some of the outdoor sports.
On the brighter side, it’s warmer today and the clouds are lifting. Plus we have tons of volunteers who are helping to ensure everything runs as smoothly as the weather will let us!
I am volunteering at the main ice arena where the majority of mens hockey games are played, as well as some ringette. We don’t have any ringette teams in the Yukon so the sport is attracting alot of fan interest. People are so impressed with the skating abilities of those ringette players; they are incredibly fast. There is talk of getting the sport up and running locally. I note that many hockey players are coming to check out the games too. I’m not sure if the genuine interest in the skating level, or a boy/girl thing! LOL.
However, it is Mens hockey which is attracting the largest crowds, of course. There are some fantastic players here and the arena is full much of the time when a game is played. The Alberta/Sask game on Saturday night was great. Two very physical, evenly matched teams and a game that ended 0-0. It was televised live on TSN. I have seen Team Ontario’s hockey and Ringette Teams both play and they are very strong. I believe Ontario’s hockey team plays Manitoba this afternoon as well. I chatted briefly with a couple of players and they were very polite young men. The event has also attracted numerous NHL scouts who are quietly sitting in the stands taking notes. They are alot of fun, those scouts. I asked one if he’d seen any hot prospects and he replied, winking “Yes, but she turned me down!”
Team Ontario is coming out to support their teams alot as are all the other provinces and territories. Everyone is in great spirits. I hear the food is fantastic. It’s cold, but people consider that to be part of the great experience of coming to the Yukon, so it’s all good.
Gymnastics is next week and I hope to get out to watch as much of it as possible. My volunteer duties at the arena are fairly extensive, ‘tho, but hopefully I can get up there.
Keep Warm!
